Introduction

Save money, save time, gain expertise

Many well-known medical, pharmaceutical, food and engineering companies use our services because our packaging consultancy saves them money, saves them time, and gives them a level of moisture-control expertise they don’t have in their own team.

Launching a new product and want to be sure of your packed product’s shelf life? Then you need to talk to us.

Optimising existing packaging for economic reasons, or to meet new environmental legislation, and need to be sure the new materials still work? Then you need to talk to one of our packaging consultants.

Our 5-step pathway

The best moisture-control packaging solution

“How does it work?” is the most common question customers ask. The answer is simple: from the beginning we think about the end. We work hard with you to define what you will regard as a success, and what will have real-world commercial value. That way, before any money is spent, everybody knows what they are getting.

We don’t want to present a solution at the end and hear “hmm… not quite”. We want clearly defined goal-posts and clear-cut success. Typically, the process follows a 5-step pathway.

Key benefits

Benefits of our consultancy services

Time

Save time on shelf-life analysis

Stop waiting 6, 12 or even 24 months for real-time shelf-life data. SUPERDRYSIM delivers scientifically validated shelf-life projections in days, not months, replacing lengthy lab trials with predictive modelling.

Money

Save money on validation trials

Traditional trials burn through materials, lab hours and product samples. We simulate dozens of configurations virtually to set desiccant type, quantity, packaging and placement before committing to physical trials.

Speed

A faster route to market

By removing testing bottlenecks and delivering scientifically backed recommendations, we help you launch faster with less risk of failure, rework or delay, and offer bespoke solutions when standard options fall short.

Pricing

How much do our consultancy services cost?

Many moisture-control and shelf-life problems are complicated and highly detailed. Fortunately, our pricing structure is simple: a clear “menu” of prices.

Request an up-to-date price estimate and one of our packaging consultants will call you back right away.

Sample reports

Can we see what we get for our money? Yes, sure!

We organise our consultancy work into three simple classes: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Ask for a free sample of any one of them.

Basic report cover

Basic report

For routine desiccant packaging, a Basic Report lets customers confidently predict their desiccant requirements. A standard list of desiccant types is considered for optimisation. It does not cover more complicated systems, for example when the product plays a role in the pouch humidity, or when there are repeated consumer interactions such as bottle-lid openings.

Intermediate report cover

Intermediate report

Adds more exotic desiccant types (such as desiccant polymers and desiccant foils) and more complicated storage conditions beyond simple moisture removal, for example when a specific RH range is required. It also considers the speed of adsorption during the initial drying phase, and the effect on product efficacy.

Advanced report cover

Advanced report

Bespoke, with the full range of CFD modelling tools applied. It calculates in-pack humidity where the product itself has a significant adsorption profile (multi-desiccant adsorption). On request we can build an interactive online app so you can run your own calculations on demand. It is the most complex report, and the one that normally delivers massive savings in lead-time and development budget.

Our packaging solutions, in the trade press

Don’t just take our word for it. Read about our latest moisture-control packaging solutions in the trade press, where they review our offerings and we discuss the benefits of our approach, including SUPERDRYSIM for pharmaceutical shelf-life assessment.

These concepts save time and money and get products to market far quicker than stability testing alone.

Why trust our consultants?

Cutting-edge science meets real production experience

Between them, our packaging consultants have over 30 years’ experience with moisture control in packaging. The team includes PhD-level academics from Oxford University and time-served production managers who ran production lines themselves before joining Baltimore.

Most of our work is shelf-life determination for pharmaceutical manufacturers and improving test-kit reliability for diagnostic device companies, but it’s not unusual for us to take calls from engineers at world-famous F1 teams, or those designing experiments for vehicles travelling to the surface of Mars.

We designed software specifically for shelf-life determination (SUPERDRYSIM). It may be used in our Basic and Intermediate reports, and is used most extensively in our Advanced Analysis packages.

“Frankly speaking, no other company offers the breadth of experience and the track record of success when it comes to moisture-control problems in packaged products…”

About our packaging consultancy services

What is moisture control consultancy?

Moisture control consultancy is a specialised service that analyses, predicts and manages moisture behaviour within the sealed packaging atmosphere of your products. We combine moisture vapour transmission rate analysis, water vapour permeability modelling and desiccant adsorption calculations to evaluate how environmental humidity interacts with your packaging materials and internal headspace over time. This includes:

  • Predicting moisture ingress through barrier materials such as PET, aluminium laminates and polymer films
  • Assessing relative humidity stability inside sealed packaging
  • Calculating desiccant requirements based on product hygroscopicity
  • Identifying risks of condensation, degradation or reduced shelf life

The outcome is a set of data-driven recommendations covering optimal barrier packaging structures, the correct desiccant type and sizing, and packaging design improvements to prevent moisture-related failure. This removes reliance on trial-and-error and gives a scientific basis for packaging validation and shelf-life optimisation.

How long does a typical packaging consultancy project take?

It depends on the complexity of the product, the materials and the validation depth required. Full packaging optimisation (including multiple scenarios and validation support) typically takes 8–12 weeks. Some projects run beyond 12 weeks, depending on the number of packaging configurations assessed, the availability of material permeability data (MVTR, WVTR), and the product’s sensitivity and hygroscopic behaviour.

Do you offer shelf-life analysis for medical devices and pharmaceuticals?

Yes. Shelf-life analysis for pharmaceutical moisture-control packaging and medical device humidity protection are core areas of expertise. We help clients identify shelf-life requirements for moisture-sensitive formulations and medical devices, including pharmaceutical packaging moisture analysis, packaging validation support, and desiccant sizing for drug products and diagnostic kits.

Can you help with moisture risk-assessment based on regional or climate-specific issues?

Absolutely. We model how packaging performs under real-world global shipping and storage conditions: high-humidity tropical environments (e.g. South East Asia, Latin America), temperature and humidity cycling during air and sea freight, cold-chain transitions and condensation risks, and long-term storage in varying regional climates.

Does your packaging consultant offer independent advice?

Yes. While we manufacture high-performance desiccants, our packaging consultant focuses on the right solution for your specific application, and advises based on your product, challenges and commercial goals.
